County Commissioners Welcome Your Feedback!

For many who work in The Market District or call it home, the area has a neighborly feel like that of a small town. Avalon and Maclay Hammock, Killearn Estates and Bobbin Brook, Hawks Nest and Live Oak Plantation are filled with people who know what I’m saying. The beautiful Alfred B. Maclay Gardens sits at the north end of the district yet is disconnected from neighborhoods on the south end. Local shops and restaurants we love along Timberlane Road, Market Street, Maclay Blvd and Village Square Blvd lack accessibility for walking and safe biking. The Board of County Commissioners is seriously taking at look at our litte piece of Tally (along with other Capital Projects) and considering improvements in connectivity.

Please take a moment to view notes from a recent BOCC Workshop

Summer Showers & Art…

As they say, #theshowmustgoon and it did at last night’s Opening of #TheArtofSummerLiving art walk in the district. Perhaps we had our doubts about 3:45, but the drops quit falling and #Tallahassee art lovers braved the puddles in search of a little wine and a lot of really great art.

First stop was Furniture Showcase & Design on Market St. Avoiding the buckets of water falling on her head and art, Pam Talley came early and hung her fine art,  displaying it beautifully amidst the fine furnishing & accessories of the design shop.  The #stilllife and the coastal scenes showcase the talent of the local artist and illustrator who regularly shows at Signature Gallery and Eye Associates.

Next door at Bedfellows, owner Gina Proctor, her staff and two local artists were enjoying every minute of anticipation with a shop full of art. William Lamb is known for his dedication “to promoting a simple, quality lifestyle at home and outdoors”, and that southern, summer lifestyle show through in his work. His artwork is perfect for Dad on Father’s Day, which btw is this Sunday, June 17th.

Designer and a new girl to the art community, Suzanne Conner is taking #Tallahassee by storm, literally. No matter how damp the weather, no one could dampen her spirits. Three pieces of art sold at her first show, says to me that Suzanne will be in a painting frenzy trying to keep up with demand. Mermaids, summer coastal scenes and flower power ignited those who love the art and artist.

Under the covered walkway at the Gallery Shops, Randy & Debby Breinen huddled with their easels and art til the heavy clouds gave way and WCTV, the local tv station appeared. The team brought a wonderful inventory of fine art and will be on location today at Gidgets!

Upstairs Glasshopper Gifts’ employee and talented photographer Richard Baas shows his love for nature with a blue heron from down on the Wakulla River and a monarch butterfly from St. Marks.

As folks continued to come out, a crowd over at My Favorite Things was having a good time enjoying recipes from MFT blog, a chat with Patty about her art and shopping the giftware. We pulled Lauren away for a moment to grab a picture of her and Mike with artist Patty Maney. Her signature works of art adorned the walls and look fabulous in the space; I wouldn’t be surprised if one stays in that perfect spot at MFT…. or goes home with Lauren.

Next door at Chrysalis Fine Fabrics & Furnishings, Susan Hugunin and her staff of talented designers are always up to something creative, but even more so last night. Local handmade #artisan jewelry, mannequins dressed for summer and incredible, incredible, did I say incredible art from Linda Grady Paintings.  Her works are so wonderful, I realized we should have been giving Best of Show ribbons, but how would you choose the best? The local artists are all so talented!

It was no surprise that the Tallahassee Wine Warehouse in the Verandas was busting at the seams. Shop owner Bob Gorman knows his product and offers up a wonderful selection. His long time #Tallahassee clients know that there is an #art to hospitality and customer service – and Bob wins that, hands down!

A short walk over to Simply Entertaining and I discovered Robin Lewis and Sharon Harris entertaining a house full of art lovers and foodies. BTW, this shop is on the must stop here list, just because of Billy’s delicioius cookies, but I have to say Nina Allen Freeman’s artwork is breathtaking. Another SOLD tag encouraged me that that artwalk was amazing.  And the space felt somewhat like a holiday party! But of course; it’s what they do – invite, cater & entertain #Tallahassee.

Small towns are wonderful for those of us who LOVE community. The event created a setting to see old friends and have a fun time with the new artists we’ve met.  Shop and restaurant owners enjoyed the activity and all is well for another day in the district.  Now, the show does go on – all summer long in The Market District. #TheArtofSummerLiving is a wonderful partnership between local business and local artistsFollow us on Pinterest for a glimpse of Opening Night.

The response has already been tremendous, so if you have not been, by all means, you must walk the district, explore the shops, have lunch with a friend and enjoy the art. Follow the blog and Facebook for stops on the art walk and come back often. It’s ever changing.

The Art of Summer Living

Beginning June 14th, we’re turning The Market District into an art gallery. Locally owned shops, salons & restaurants will be showcasing such local Tallahassee artists as Audrey Peaty, Pattie Maney, Randy & Debby Brienen . Many of the more than 20 locations will be offering refreshments during the

Artists will be on site from 4pm – 7pm,
      Sharing their passion for art.

Our own Pam Talley brings her talent to the gallery as an artist and illustrator. Suzanne Conner, William Lamb, Nina Allen Freeman and Anosh Gill are exhibiting as well.

The Wine Warehouse on Market Street in the Verandas will host a wine tasting on Opening Night.

Pam Talley is a native Floridian, raised in Southwest Florida and a breast cancer survivor since 2001. She now lives in Tallahassee, Florida with her husband Steve, daughter Taryn and Henri the cat. She teaches art at the Brush and Palette Studio and recently illustrated a children’s book “Two foals, a Dash of Sprinkles and a Cherry on Top” written by Brittany Bevis and published by Caballo Press. Pam shows her work at Signature Art Gallery and is a member of Ten Artist Limited and the Alla Prima.

Audrey Peaty shares, ”From an early age I have been illustrating the world around me while learning new techniques and creative skills. Working as an art director in advertising agencies and then launching my own architectural illustration business, I have had lots of experience in both commercial art and marketing. Specializing in water color, I enjoy exploring new textures and techniques and teaching them to others.”

Audrey has a passion for a rather unique approach to art. The Art Parties that she hosts teach others how to do it. No brushes are allowed…they pour liquid acrylic on canvas and let it run around and mix….the artist (or novice) has little control and that makes it fun….if you don’t like; just hose it off and try another…You don’t have to know how to paint, just play with color…. Audrey’s works, from traditional watercolor to poured liquid acrylic canvas, is hosted by So Pure Salon and Spa.

Pattie Maney expresses her passion website

More than twenty-five years of creating and exhibiting art has finally brought me to the perfect subject. Animals. The pets in my life have made such a profound difference in the quality of my every day. They wake me in the morning to see the sunrise and they take me outside to see it set in the evening. Studing their anatomy, the hair that makes up their beautiful coats, there are things that bring me joy. The bright colors I often use convey my feelings of love for them. Maney’s signature roosters will be displayed at one of the district’s fine dining restaurants – A la Provence.

Husband and wife Randy and Debra Brienen share a passion for painting that is evident in theirwork. Both work mainly in the acrylic medium but are each unique in what they aim to express withtheir paintings. Randy is formally-trained artist whose work expresses a variety of styles andtechniques in a contemporary tradition. Debra, who is self-taught, typically expresses the joy andhappiness she finds in living by favoring idyllic moments captured in landscape or architecture. Gidgets Clothing and Spriggs Laid Back Luxe on Market Street will host the works of this talented couple during the summer living gallery show and sale.

Michael Brennan is an artist specializing in horse. He makes his home and studio in Tallahassee, Florida. His work can be found in many of the equestrian homes and farms in north Florida and South Georgia and displayed for sale at Anthony’s Wood Fire Grill.

Cait May, student and body painting artist, will perform her talent at various locations throughout The Market District, usually on Saturdays in June and July. During The Art of Summer Living, you may find Cait in the Gallery Shops on Market St. Cait May fell in love with facepainting after her uncle, a retired Ringling Bros. clown, suggested it as an outlet for her creativity. She has been painting for over 3 years, both freelance and with Jason Levinson & Co. and About Faces Entertainers. She currently attends art school in Baltimore, Maryland, but can’t resist returning to her home in Florida as often as possible! She can’t wait to show her skills at The Market District, and hopes to paint the entire population of perusers!

Spring Home Ideas Event

The Art of Making a House – a Home

We dream of a white house and a white picket fence and everything in between. Then reality shows us that we may lack some of the creativity and expertise it takes to fill our nest with the warmth of comfortable colors, stylish fabric and delicious table top designs. Remedy – a Spring Home Ideas Event!

When they first teamed up in Betton, Chrysalis Fine Fabrics and My Favorite Things found that their product was a wonderful compliment to one another. Small business owners Susan Hugunin and Lauren Teal discovered a kinship through their nesting instincts using decorator fabrics and fine china. Beautiful embroidered fabrics on tables adorned with monogrammed china create the hospitable feel one can expect in Tallahassee. A feel that is not necessarily formal, just extraordinary without being over the top.

A little over a year ago, Chrysalis and My Favorite Things were reunited in The Market District. Under the blue awnings at the Pavilions, Susan and Lauren carved out a new space for themselves and their customers. A new look, a larger storefront and an ever current product for their loyal customers made the new location at 1410 Market St., the perfect spot.

With you in mind, the duo is hosting a wonderful event Thursday, Friday & Saturday, May 10 – 12. Not just a Spring Open House, but a House Full of Dreams for you to bring home. Table tops ideas designed from the traditional to the formal, color trends for the modern home, vignettes to stir the imagination, a custom pillow event and even a jewelry fashion show.  Creative Pillow Talk will be offered on Friday with construction tips and demo. Saturday shoppers can register for a FREE Dash & Albert Tote and Dash Dollars.

Each day is packed full of events, drawings, gifts and more at the Spring Home Ideas Event. Call Chrysalis Fabrics at 850-224-2924 or My Favorite Things 850-681-2824 for more information. Open Thursday 10-7, Friday 10-6, Saturday 10-6.

The ideas will make you feel good and look good too! As renowned designer Phoebe Howard says, “You should always be the best decoration in your own home.”
