You’re Invited to Our Summer Social on Thursday!

Remember earlier this summer?   We began turning The Market District into an art gallery in The Art of Summer Living. Locally owned shops, salons & restaurants created  partnerships to showcase local art,  and the response has been tremendous!

This Thursday and Saturday, we are inviting everyone to a Summer Social to enjoy the art walk. We’re serving up lemonade, iced tea, wine, cookies or
cupcakes in the sweet summer gallery.

Work Ethic? Look no further than your local shops for the best example!

Little more than a year ago, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks declared the second Saturday of each month as LOCAL BUSINESS SATURDAY. This small business focused campaign brought much needed attention to our local families who own small businesses and live in our neighborhoods. Their children go to school with our children and our families go to church together. That’s life – that’s the way it’s done in America and we need to support local business. These small business owners give it their all to build and maintain a successful business. If you question your work ethic, just get to know your local shop owner or restauranteur. This willingness to go against the odds, sets a perfect example. If you’re serious about work and success, here is a great  BLOG - Building Personal Strength

―”Striving for success without hard work
is like trying to harvest
where you haven’t planted.”
David Bly, American politician (1952)

The Value of a Work Ethic – 10 Great Quotes
What kind of work do you do? Whatever it is, much depends on your willingness to work your buns off when it counts.

TEAM – are you a player?

Small family businesses have proven for years that working hard and smart can often times yield the fruit of great success. I’ve known many who have worked day and night, year round to achieve the dream. Most likely if you’re successful, then the storefront next to you will enjoy the residual effect. Hurrah! That’s a good thing. It’s all about working together that makes a shopping community a true destination. Not one successful business has made it alone; employees, mentors, account executives, etc all benefit the end result. Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

There are those who enjoy being on a team and thrive when working as a team player committed to the effort. Although many have moments of leadership, some would rather support – and run in the same direction with others for the common good. Have you ever read the acronym TEAMTogether Everyone Achieves More? It’s a bit hokey, but ever so true. There is a place for everyone on the team to use their talents and be a team player.

Below are several key points. Most are old common sense, good work ethic principles that never go out of style. But take a look at the list to see what areas of personal improvement might benefit you in relation to the larger group. Then follow the link to Marty Brounstein’s article to expand on the principle.

Ten Qualities of an Effective Team Player

By Marty Brounstein (source DUMMIES.COM)

If you were choosing team members for a business team in your organization, who would the best team players be? Assuming that people have the right technical skills for the work to be done, what other factors would you use to select your team members?

Teams need strong team players to perform well. But what defines such people?

  1. Demonstrates reliability
  2. Communicates constructively
  3. Listens actively
  4. Functions as an active participant
  5. Shares openly and willingly
  6. Cooperates and pitches in to help
  7. Exhibits flexibility
  8. Shows commitment to the team
  9. Works as a problem-solver
  10. Treats others in a respectful and supportive manner

Food Drive to Kick Off this Saturday!

District Merchants Kick Off Food Drive for America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend

  • Tallahassee, Florida – The Market District is hosting a food drive and inviting Tallahassee and surrounding area residents to drop off donations at the PEAS IN A POD event beginning November 12th. The launch, in connection with Local Business Saturday, will commence with a press conference on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 10:30 AM on Market Street. Representatives from the City of Tallahassee, Second Harvest of the Big Bend and local businesses will be on hand setting the example with personal donations.

In an attempt to provide assistance through these difficult economic times, merchants on Timberlane Road and Market Street will collect non-perishable foods at their businesses. Thanks to PODS, one of the event sponsors of PEAS IN A POD, a POD storage unit will be on location in the district from November 12 – 30.

  • “Our hope is that all merchants will create an “in-store” incentive for customers to bring non-perishable food items for Second Harvest”, says Ten Thousand Villages Store Manager, Sherry Kelly. “Originally we were going to host a one-day collection as part of Second Saturday, but realizing the tremendous need in our area, we decided to receive donations through November 30th.” Throughout the nearly month-long campaign, merchants will bring collected food items to the POD where it will be picked up and distributed via America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

  • According to Second Harvest statistics,(www.fightinghunger.org) 1 in 6 residents in the Big Bend struggles with hunger. Their mission is to feed the hungry in the Big Bend and to educate and engage the community in the fight against hunger. The Market District sponsors recognize the need and are more than glad to give back to the community. Local sponsors include CMC Properties, Awards4U, Glasshopper Gifts, PODS, Prime Meridian Bank and The Market District.
